The Fullerene High Pressure Test Cell

picture of the high pressure hydrogen rig

Southampton University (via the EPSRC CryoMAS project) was looking to build upon previous studies of the absorption of hydrogen by C60 fullerenes at temperature and under high pressure conditions.
The manufacture of hydrogen doped buckeyballs was to operate at pressures up to 850 barG on a regular basis and must operate unattended for extended periods. Strata was commissioned to design and construct a turn-key system that was able to fit these criteria.

The system we delivered uses a gas booster to take the gas up to pressure and then heat the isolated system to reaction temperature. The control box also has several trip conditions monitoring the local environment and relevant process conditions. If the rig moves outside of the pre-determined limits, the rig trips and returns to a safe condition and awaits the operator.

The heart of the rig is the high pressure Parr reactor. Strata worked closely with Scientific & Medical Products to select and source the reactor for the system.
