Strata Technology has designed, built and commissioned a turnkey automated PVC pilot plant for Synthomer, a major supplier of synthetic polymer additives which are used in the PVC manufacturing process.
Strata also developed the user-friendly, dedicated software that enables sophisticated process trending, data recording, alarm recognition, and parameter monitoring to be carried out.
3D modelling was used extensively in the development of the reactors and other key components to ensure that all client requirements were met. Safety features include:
- dedicated VCM mass metering
- venting and extraction capability for the entire plant area
- double automated valves for process containment
- VOC destruction to >99.99% for gases released to the environment.
With all of the complexity of a full-scale design, the engineering challenges posed by this pilot plant were considerable – not least because of the highly toxic and flammable nature of vinyl chloride monomer and the exothermic nature of the vinyl chloride polymerisation reaction.
The pilot plant mimics conditions in a full-scale commercial reactor, and can be tuned to match the technology of any PVC producer worldwide, providing PVC manufacturers with a real added-value package of a state-of-the-art PVC pilot plant combined with Synthomer’s unique technical service and R&D support through a team of specialist chemists.
